[2]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia Tech\u2019s public health program, within the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, along with the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority, are working to reduce opioid abuse. Kathy Hosig helps lead this program. \u201cWhat we hope to do is to reduce substance misuse and addiction across the state, and we try to go to areas that are most affected,\u201d Hosig tells Digital Journal. \u201cThe idea is that through disseminating evidence-based prevention materials, that we prevent substance misuse and addiction so that we don\u2019t have the adverse outcomes, and then we don\u2019t need so much treatment and recovery.\u201d [3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, along with other states, launched a lawsuit against Purdue that recently, in 2025 was settled. The states will receive a settlement of $7.4 billion to be paid over the next 15 years. Virginia will receive $107.4 million of that. This settlement also ends the Sackler\u2019s control of Purdue and bar them from selling opioids in the U.S. \u201cThe fight to secure this monumental settlement has been long and hard fought, but my office never gave up,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares<\/strong>.
